What Is a Tesla Coil?

A Tesla coil is an electrical resonant transformer circuit designed by inventor Nikola Tesla in 1891. It is used to produce high-voltage, low-current, high-frequency alternating-current electricity. The Coil magazine is named after this seriously badass wizardry.

The image is a photograph of an active Tesla coil with a long exposure. It is a circular blue object on top of a brown pole. Streaks of blue-colored electrical currents appear to be coming from the coil, and the streaks look like tiny bolts of lightning or static electricity.
